2012 Ford Edge

Its new Door Edge Protector, which debuts in January 2012 on the Ford Focus, activates as the door is opened. The feature defends against more than 90 per cent of variously positioned obstructions to the front doors and 85 per cent at the rear doors.

The new Door Edge Protector extends into its protective position at a door opening gap of less than 150mm and it defends against more than 90% of variously positioned obstructions to the front doors and 85% at the rear doors.

Ford has debuted a new technology that could help prevent scratches and dents caused by opening vehicle doors.

This allows it to absorb the shock should the edge of the vehicle's door hit another object, defending against over 90 percent of obstructions to the front doors and 85 percent at the rear doors.

2010 Ferrari California

There are no significant changes for the 2010 Ferrari California.

California is a different sort of state and it's a different sort of Ferrari, too. The California is the first Ferrari to get a dual-clutch automated manual transmission. It's surprisingly agile and an easy car to drive hard -- perfect for the first-timers Ferrari anticipates the California will attract.

In the
2010 Ferrari California's price range is the Aston Martin DB9 Volante, while Aston's V8 Vantage Roadster, Audi's R8 Spyder and Maserati's GranTurismo are notably cheaper.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Ferrari California retractable-hardtop convertible comes standard with 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights, the "manettino" steering wheel knob for adjustable vehicle settings, full leather interior, fold-down rear seatback, a trip computer, hard-drive navigation system and a CD player sound system with touchscreen interface.

The rear-wheel-drive Ferrari California is powered by a 4.3-liter V8 that cranks out 460 hp and 357 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual is the only available transmission. According to Ferrari, the California is capable of sprinting from zero to 60 mph in fewer than 4 seconds. Antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, an automatically deploying rollbar, and stability and traction control are standard on the
2010 Ferrari California.

Like every current Ferrari, the new California has an interior befitting its lofty price.

Driving Impressions
Weighing about 3,800 pounds, the
2010 Ferrari California is hardly an elemental sports car.

2010 Ferrari 599

Lusting after the 2010 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano? Oh, and it's not only a Ferrari; it's the most expensive Ferrari.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano is a two-seat coupe available in one trim level. Standard equipment includes 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels shod in performance tires, xenon headlights, an adaptive suspension system with magnetic dampers, carbon-ceramic brakes, rear parking sensors, automatic dual-zone climate control, power seats, leather upholstery and interior trim, a power-adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a navigation system and an eight-speaker Becker sound system with a CD player.

HGTE also adds unique exterior and interior styling cues.
Other options include different wheel designs, a space-saver spare tire, run-flat tires, front parking sensors, tinted rear windows, a carbon-fiber racing wheel with integrated LED shift lights, fully powered Recaro sport seats, an iPod interface, a six-CD changer and a Bose Hi Fi premium audio system.

Powertrains and Performance
Ferrari offers a traditional six-speed manual transmission as standard or a six-speed single-clutch automated manual transmission with paddle shifters as an option. Antilock disc brakes, stability control and traction control are standard.

Interior Design and Special Features
Unlike supercars of old, the
2010 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano offers much more than a cramped cockpit with minimal accoutrements. The standard navigation system offers a tiny, antiquated screen and there's no HD or satellite radio available.

2010 Ferrari 458 Italia

The Ferrari 458 Italia is an all-new model for 2010.

Though constructed mostly of aluminum, the Italia is nevertheless a tad heavier than the car it replaces. The Italia's direct-injected 4.5-liter V8 screams to a 9,000-rpm redline and produces 562 horsepower. There are significant ergonomic foibles in the new car to be sure (the turn signals are triggered by buttons on the steering wheel, for instance). The
2010 Ferrari 458 Italia is a two-seat exotic sports car available in one coupe body style and a single trim.

Standard are 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels, performance tires, carbon-ceramic brakes, adjustable driving and vehicle settings, automatic xenon headlights, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery and trim, a power-adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel (with buttons for the turn signals, wipers, lights, ignition, suspension and other vehicle settings), Bluetooth and a sound system with an auxiliary audio jack.

Optional features include forged aluminum alloy wheels, 19-inch run-flat tires, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, cruise control, power seats, four different seat design choices, four-point race belts, faux suede upholstery and/or carpet, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, a navigation system, an iPod interface, satellite radio and a premium sound system.

The
2010 Ferrari 458 Italia is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 that sends 562 hp and 398 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels through a seven-speed, dual-clutch automated manual transmission. A traditional manual transmission isn't offered. Ferrari estimates that the 458 Italia will go from zero to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

The
2010 Ferrari 458 Italia comes with antilock carbon-ceramic brakes, traction and stability control, and side airbags. To free up space for the enlarged transmission paddle shifters, Ferrari did away with traditional steering wheel column stalks.

2011 Ferrari California

California Love by 2Pac kept running through my head as I drove the Sea to Sky Highway in Ferrari's retractable hardtop showcase called California.

This front-engine Ferrari is the gateway into the "club," offering a lower price point and a more accessible daily driver compared with the exotic and more expensive mid-engine offerings from Maranello.

With a starting price of $239,000, this is still a very expensive car, but one that Ferrari has positioned as its volume seller.

This shape has been used before, but with all the Ferrari bits added on, this car demands attention.

THE COCKPIT
The interiors of Ferrari cars have baffled me for many years.

Case in point is the radio/navigation unit used in the California. The ride, steering, engine and light feel of the California do make this California Love.

The California is the kind of car that many high-end convertible owners would thoroughly enjoy.

If the owner of a Mercedes SL 63 AMG were to try this car they would notice how light and un-German the California performs. Power: 4.3-litre V8 with 460hp
Sticker price: $239,000

2011 Ferrari 599

,The 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO is all new.

Introduction
The 2011 599 GTO represents the pinnacle (so far) from Ferrari, as the company's fastest road car ever built. The GTO also takes a few playbook pages from the 599XX, Ferrari's rare racetrack-only variant. Further complicating a 599 GTO acquisition is its estimated cost of $750,000. Ouch.

In producing the 599 GTO—the fastest-ever Ferrari road car, at least in terms of lap times around Ferrari’s home track (Fiorano)—the engineers in Maranello, Italy, focused on four key areas: increasing power, decreasing weight, reducing understeer and improving downforce.

Ferrari says the GTO’s 6.0-liter V-12 is “about 90 percent of the 599XX’s engine.” Besides adopting the 599XX’s crankshaft and intake system, the GTO V-12 has new connecting rods and pistons, raised 11.9:1 compression (up from the GTB’s 11.2: 1 ratio) and the 599XX’s lighter (and 8-decibel louder) exhaust—with catalytic converters, of course. The result is 661 bhp at 8250 rpm and 458 lb.-ft. of torque at 6500 rpm, which make the 599 GTO the most powerful road-going Ferrari ever.

Besides being more powerful, the 599 GTO is 220 lb. lighter than the GTB (which weighed 3865 lb. on our scales). Ferrari says these brakes were absolutely required to cope with the Ferrari 599’s increased performance level.

2012 Infiniti G37

The 2012 Infiniti G37 Convertible gets no Limited Edition Package.

If you’ve seen the banner ads sprinkled all over the Web, you know the
Infiniti G37 is one of the most heavily marketed cars around. We finally had a chance to spend a week driving the G37 sedan in a variety of conditions: on curvy roads in the country, on a long four-hour drive, and in everyday commuting conditions. The biggest takeaway: this is one of the best-handling sedans on the road, with a sleek styling that hints at the Infiniti M37x, but in a smaller package that’s fun to drive and has plenty of acceleration power.

As with any Infiniti, there’s a fine balance between elegant styling and a sporty drive, and the G37 seems to cater to both equally. There’s a slide out thigh support on the Infiniti G37 that provides a little more comfort, especially on long drives. On the long drive, the cocooning seat felt a bit cramped and caused some back strain, but provides a sure driving experience because you feel nestled into the seat and can easily reach the controls and feel curves in the road.

There’s enough head-snapping punch to draw evil stares from passengers.

Infiniti does use independent front and rear suspension and the power steering responds differently depending on your speed level. What this meant on our test drives was that the
Infiniti G37 handled smooth around corners, and the smaller size meant the car felt like it was going faster than it really was.

The cruise control does not change speeds when the car senses another vehicle, and there are no blind-spot detectors. Other small sedans tend to make your music sound like it is mixed in a blender. Infiniti rates the
Infiniti G37 at 18 mpg for city driving and 25 mpg for highway.

2011 Ferrari 458 Italia

Following the model F430 Ferrari, the Italian car maker presented the model F458 in September of 2009. Solingen company Wimmer Rennsporttechnik added some extra horsepower to the initial 570hp and only endowed the car with 588hp and 562Nm. Optimization of the software costs an astonishing 2,999 euros for just 18hp.

"The Ferrari is an extremely well-balanced car. Steering is super-accurate.

"This car is really, really impressive. I had all stability controls turned off, and this the kind of car where you can live without 'em.

On the steering... "It's a confidence-inspiring car, but still sharp. I still felt like I was always steering the car with the steering wheel. Full-tread street tires. I don't have to spend time catching the car much."

"It puts down power amazingly well, unlike some of the other powerful cars. It just digs off a corner. Powerful engine, very fast car. Very fast. Overall... The car's fabulous. Fabulous."

Accepts power con brio. Fast, smooth, aggressive shifts; amazing spread of power from 4000 rpm to 9000 rpm."
Best handling trait is traction under power."

Turn 11: "Cuts in sharply and accurately. Rear well-behaved, stays put. Overachiever on street tires."

Mitsubishi Evo

One of the more popular cars of this ilk is the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

he Evolution (or "Evo") is based on the Lancer compact sedan. Packing a powerful turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, the Lancer Evolution quickly became a successful rally car.

Current Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
Today's Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, technically known as the Lancer Evolution X, offers a level of performance typically found in European sports cars and sport sedans that cost considerably more. As a bonus, the Evo looks the part of a legitimate high-performance car as well.
Acceleration, too, is top-notch, as the Evo can give far more expensive cars a run for their money.

Used Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Models
The second-generation Lancer Evolution, the Evo X, debuted for the 2008 model year. The first-generation U.S.-market Evo, sold from 2003-'06, was actually the eighth generation overall by Mitsubishi's count. Arriving on our shores in 2003, the Evo VIII was an extreme car with extreme ride characteristics.

The Evo VIII also had a decidedly sparse interior that betrayed its econocar roots. The Evo VIII, rechristened "Evo IX" for 2006 based on a handful of revisions, was initially powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 271 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The Evo VIII/IX still stands as one of the all-time great driver's cars.

A number of running changes were made to this Evo generation. The MR model debuted for 2005, featuring a six-speed manual transmission and other performance upgrades; the all-wheel-drive system was also improved for all models. If you insist on buying a well-maintained
Mitsubishi Evo with extensive records, you'll likely be rewarded with endless fun from the car's proven powertrain.

Porsche Boxster

When it debuted in the late '90s, the Porsche Boxster ushered in an era of the more affordable Porsche convertible.

Current Porsche Boxster
The
Porsche Boxster is available in the base version, the more powerful Boxster S and the lightweight Spyder. Standard on every model is a six-speed manual, with Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual (named PDK) optional.

Used Porsche Boxster Models
The Boxster was most recently updated for the 2009 model year. The base model's manual transmission also became a six-speed. The Boxster Spyder was introduced for 2011.

Originally, the base Boxster 2.7-liter six-cylinder produced 228 hp, and the Boxster S model's bigger flat-6 displaced 3.2 liters with an output of 258 horses. For 2007, the 2.7-liter was upgraded to pump out 245 hp and the Boxster S gained a 3.4-liter engine with 295 hp. The original Boxster debuted for the 1997 model year.

The first-generation
Porsche Boxster came with a power-operated soft top and a 201-hp, 2.5-liter flat-6 engine. The Boxster S featured 250 hp, larger wheels and brakes and a more stiffly tuned suspension. For 2004, Porsche increased the power output of both engines slightly.

Though reasonable for a luxury-sports roadster, the
Porsche Boxster has been consistently among the most expensive cars in its class.

Options: 19 inch SportDesign wheel, BOSE® Surround Sound System incl. CD storage box, Porsche Communication Management (PCM 3.0) including extende, Sport Chrono Package Plus, Heated seats, Top tinted windscreen, ParkAssist, Fully automatic climate control, 7-speed double clutch transmission (Porsche Doppelkupplung -, Standard seat, Floor mats, PDK 3-spoke sports steering wheel with shift paddles, Wind deflector, Telephone module for PCM

2012 Mazda 3

The car debuted alongside the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover.

The new model year
Mazda3 features a redesigned front fascia. The car features a new front grille and bumper design. The interior has also been upgraded from the previous model year.

The engine lineup from the previous model
year has been retained. The choices for transmission system will be a six-speed manual, a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission system
To put the overall industry losses into perspective, approximately 285,000 vehicles were lost each production work day that global light-vehicle production was not functional.

Mazda's new SkyActiv technologies were developed entirely in-house as part of the company's "Building Block" strategy, which prioritizes the improvement of basic automotive technologies - engines, transmissions, bodies and chassis - to deliver outstanding environmental and safety performance without sacrificing Mazda's fun-to-drive qualities or costing more for consumers.

The introduction of these technologies will result in major reductions in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions for all Mazda models, improving the average fuel economy of Mazda vehicles sold globally by 30 per cent by 2015 (compared to 2008 figures).

We look to strengthen this figure with the launch of the refreshed
2012 Mazda3 featuring all-new SkyActiv technology.

The
2012 Mazda3 SkyActiv goes on sale in October, and will be available with a SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre gasoline engine mated to either the SkyActiv-Drive sixspeed automatic transmission or the SkyActiv-MT six-speed manual transmission.

The new SkyActiv engine and transmissions enables the
Mazda3 to achieve a fuel economy rating of 4.9 L/100 km.

Beginning with the 2
012 Mazda3, SkyActiv technology will be the heart and soul of Mazda's future product.

2004 Ford Mustang

With an all-new model scheduled for '05, there are few changes for the 2004 Ford Mustang. All models wear commemorative 40th anniversary exterior badging, while V6 and GT models can be ordered with a full 40th anniversary package that includes additional exterior and interior enhancements.

General Motors released a sexy new Camaro and Firebird duo in '82, so Ford countered by continually updating the Mustang GT and engineering a special turbocharged performance model called the SVO. In the late 1980s, Mustang enthusiasts heard that Ford planned to replace the rear-drive model with a front-drive car based on a Mazda. To retain buyer interest, Ford kept boosting power and improving the Mustang in subtle but effective ways. In 1999, the Mustang was updated with boxy new styling and more power. Base, Deluxe and Premium models have a V6 engine.

The GT Deluxe, GT Premium and Mach 1 get a V8. Coupes are available in each trim, while the convertible is limited to regular and GT versions of Deluxe and Premium trim. Deluxe models add a power driver seat, cruise control and a spoiler on coupes; additionally, the GT Deluxe gets 17-inch wheels, an upgraded suspension, sport seats and a limited-slip differential.

Powertrains and Performance
Standard on base, Deluxe and Premium Mustangs is a 190-horsepower, 3.8-liter V6. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on the 2004 Ford Mustang. Antilock brakes and traction control are optional on all Deluxe models and standard on all Premium and Mach 1 models. The Mustang coupe received five-star frontal crash test scores for the driver and passenger.

2010 Dodge Viper

The ACR package gains a short-throw shifter and revised rear wing. The 2010 model year marks the end of the line for the second-generation Dodge Viper, and quite possibly the end of the Viper altogether. Since the original concept car debuted in 1989, the Viper has embodied the brash American spirit of excess. We'll mourn the loss, mostly because of the Viper's unapologetic nature.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Dodge Viper SRT-10 is offered as either a two-seat coupe or a soft-top roadster. Inside, the Viper comes with race-inspired seats, power-adjustable pedals, a tilting steering wheel, air-conditioning, full power accessories, six-point harness pre-fabrication, leather and Alcantara upholstery, keyless entry and a seven-speaker sound system with a CD player.

Satellite radio and a navigation system are packaged together as options. No, this package doesn't impart a "Jersey Shore" spray-on tan to your skin, it adds tan napa seats, a tan roadster convertible top and matching interior trim. The big performance-enhancing option for the Viper is the American Club Racer (ACR) package, which is only available for the coupe variant.

Powering the
2010 Dodge Viper is a completely bonkers 8.4-liter V10 engine that thunders out 600 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. The best safety equipment for the 2010 Dodge Viper isn't included with the car. Conspicuously absent are side airbags, traction control and stability control -- making the skills of the aforementioned driver even more critical.

Driving Impressions
The
2010 Dodge Viper is rough, raw, loud and unrefined when compared to other sports cars, and therein lies much of its appeal. Novices can appreciate the Viper's straight-line power and fury, but only advanced drivers should explore its cornering limits.

2013 BMW M5

BMW M5 revealed its new M5 in the flesh to journalists at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca yesterday prior to the Pebble Beach Concours/Monterey Historics weekend. Of course, much of the fifth-generation M5's development occurred on the famous Nordschleife race track.

The 4.4-liter direct-injected reverse-flow twin-turbo V8 develops 560 horsepower from 5,750-7,000 rpm (with a 7,200-rpm redline), along with an even 500 pound-feet of torque from 1,500-5,750 rpm. Maximum boost is 22 psi. And yes, that makes it the most powerful engine ever fitted to a production BMW.

For one thing, it has all new heads, as it's the first M engine to feature BMW's Valvetronic variable valve control system, which the M SUVs don't have.
BMW claims the new M5 with the M DCT will hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
You'd think BMW would've spruced it up a bit to make it a bit more special.

Is the new
BMW M5 what we’re accustomed to expect from BMW’s M division? Um, well, as we discovered during a session in southern Spain, the future of M is big, blustery, red-hot, torque-gushing turbos fitted to smaller engines with mass-production roots. (Despite employing aluminum doors and an aluminum hood, the new M5’s mass creeps to 4300 pounds or so.) So it may not eclipse its predecessor’s 158-foot 70-mph-to-0 braking figure.

Smokes If You Got ’Em
Along with three driver-selectable stability-control modes, three settings for throttle response, three firmness levels for the shocks, and three shift-speed options, the have-it-your-way M5 offers you three steering modes, which progressively reduce boost. There’s so much torque steaming aft that even with an electronically locked clutch-plate differential and larger 295/35 Michelin Pilot SuperSport rear tires, the back end easily breaks grip from a standstill under wide-open acceleration.

The stated reason for the 4.4’s lofty redline is track lappers who may want to hold gears longer, but we suspect the real reason is to pay tribute to M’s heritage of lofty top ends: The old E60’s V-10 spun to 8250.

Manual Transmission in Limbo?

The basics remain the same, but BMW’s throttle-less Valvetronic induction control is deployed on the S63 TU, as are larger turbos and intercoolers, different injectors and control electronics, and a higher compression ratio of 10.0:1.

The power delivery is—dare we say it—almost diesel-like. The Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, a reinforced version of the M3’s optional unit, is geared tall, with a double overdrive and a 3.15:1 final drive, both to save fuel and to take advantage of the engine’s power curve, or relative lack of curve, as it were. ” says Albert Biermann, vice president of engineering for BMW’s M division. “Solution: scream louder.

One thing
BMW M5 did hear were the complaints about the E60’s small fuel tank.

2010 Dodge Dakota

The 2010 Dodge Dakota gains revised suspension tuning for an improved ride and better handling. Dodge hopes to remedy some of that with the 2010 Dakota. Also receiving high marks are the pickup's innovative rear under-seat storage bins and comfortable seating. As a workhorse, though, the 2010 Dodge Dakota still stands tall.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The TRX4 and Laramie models are only available as crew cabs.
Standard features for the ST include 16-inch steel wheels, a dual-position tailgate, foglights, air-conditioning, front bucket seats, a front center console, two rear folding seats (extended cab only), a rear under-seat storage system (crew cab only), cloth upholstery, a tilt steering wheel and a CD player stereo.

The Big Horn adds 17-inch alloy wheels, body-colored bumpers and front fascia, full power accessories and cruise control. The Big Horn and Laramie extended cabs can be equipped with a front bench seat in place of the standard buckets. A 3.7-liter V6 is standard on every
2010 Dodge Dakota, producing 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all Dakotas, with four-wheel drive being optional (standard on the TRX4).

Fuel economy registers an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined for rear-drive models, while four-wheel-drive mileage drops slightly to 14/15/18 mpg. A five-speed automatic is standard. In performance testing, a 4WD Dakota Laramie crew cab with the V8 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. When properly equipped, a V8 Dakota can tow 7,200 pounds.

Safety
In side-impact tests, the
2010 Dodge Dakota crew cab without side curtain airbags earned five stars for the protection of both front and rear passengers. On the upside, the Dakota's interior design is mostly straightforward.

2010 Dodge Nitro

The 2010 Dodge Nitro gains a deceleration fuel cut-off feature when equipped with the 3.7-liter V6. Nitro was one heck of an American Gladiator. Sadly, the 2010 Dodge Nitro doesn't live up to its namesake as an American-made SUV gladiator.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Dodge Nitro is a five-passenger SUV available in Heat, Detonator and Shock trim levels. Standard equipment includes 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, foglamps, roof rails, tinted windows, keyless entry, full power accessories, heated mirrors, air-conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, a 60/40-split-folding and reclining rear seat and a six-speaker stereo with a CD player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. The Nitro Shock trim adds different 20-inch wheels, a sunroof, leather upholstery and heated seats.

The Dodge Nitro Heat comes with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 210 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available, with the latter being a part-time system with high- and low-range gearing. This engine returns an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 16/20/17 with four-wheel drive. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 16/21/18 with rear-drive and 15/21/17 with four-wheel. In performance testing, a rear-drive Nitro with the 4.0-liter engine went from zero to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds.

Safety
The stability control includes a trailer sway control feature. Rear parking sensors are standard on the Detonator and Shock. In government crash tests, the
2010 Dodge Nitro achieved a top five-star rating in all frontal and side crash categories. There are 32 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat.

Driving Impressions
With its aggressive styling and macho name, you'd think that the
2010 Dodge Nitro offered vigorous power and acceleration.

2010 Dodge Journey

The 2010 Dodge Journey receives driver and front-passenger active head restraints, a larger 9-inch screen for the rear-seat entertainment system and standard keyless entry.

Other neat options include MyGIG, Chrysler's hard-drive-based navigation and entertainment system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch screen. Speaking of pricing, that's another of the Journey's strengths, as the base SE model costs about the same as a bare-bones five-seat family sedan.

The Journey's cabin materials are no nicer than those of the dismal Dodge Caliber economy car, on which the Journey is based. Overall, th
e 2010 Dodge Journey has a split personality. Among competing crossovers, Toyota's RAV4 offers a third-row seat along with better performance, and the surprisingly enjoyable Kia Rondo is another model to consider. We do not recommend the Journey.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
A midsize crossover SUV, the
2010 Dodge Journey comes in SE, SXT and R/T trim levels. All models come standard with two-row seating for five; with the optional 50/50-split-folding third-row bench (SXT and R/T only), capacity increases to seven.
The top-drawer R/T features 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

The base-model Journey SE comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The EPA gives the four-cylinder Journey ratings of 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. Every
2010 Journey includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, rollover-sensing stability control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags for all three rows.

Interior Design and Special Features
Inside, the
2010 Dodge Journey is a spacious, versatile family hauler.

2010 Dodge Grand Caravan

The 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan gains active front-seat headrests across the lineup and standard tri-zone manual climate control on SE models.

The
2010 Dodge Grand Caravan has history on its side, if nothing else. A dual-screen rear entertainment system, Sirius Satellite TV and hard-drive audio storage are also available.

Unfortunately, these attributes are overshadowed by the Grand Caravan's quality issues and other faults like low-quality interior materials and a feeble base engine. The
2010 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan is available in three trim levels: C/V, SE and SXT. The SXT adds a larger engine, 16-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, an eight-way power driver seat with manual lumbar adjustment, power-adjustable pedals, power and remote-operated sliding side doors (optional on SE), second-row power windows and third-row power vent-style windows (also optional on SE), an overhead console with storage bins and ambient lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and satellite radio. With the SXT, the rear DVD entertainment system includes a swiveling second-row flip-down screen.

The front-wheel-drive
2010 Dodge Grand Caravan is equipped with one of three V6 engines. The SXT comes standard with a 3.8-liter V6 that produces 197 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque and gets 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. The Grand Caravan comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front headrests and full-length side curtain airbags.

Optional on both the SE and SXT trims are second-row integrated child booster seats (requires Swivel 'n Go). In government crash tests, the
2010 Grand Caravan scored a perfect five stars in all frontal- and side-impact categories. The Grand Caravan's interior design theme is plain but functional, with high-mounted audio controls for easy visibility and operation. Aft of the comfortable front seats, there are various seating choices.

The
2010 Grand Caravan's handling will be adequate for most owners, particularly in sport-tuned SXT trim. As for Grand Caravans with the ancient 3.3-liter engine, we'd say don't bother -- they're sluggish and marginally less efficient than the muscular 4.0-liter SXT.

2010 Dodge Charger

The 2010 Dodge Charger receives standard side curtain airbags and minor exterior styling tweaks, but is no longer available with front-seat side airbags.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Dodge Charger is a large sedan available in base, 3.5, Rallye, R/T and SRT8 trim levels. Rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional on all but the base and SRT8.

Stepping up to the Charger 3.5 (formerly SXT) nets you a larger V6 engine, 18-inch wheels (AWD only) and satellite radio. The Rallye adds 18-inch alloy wheels (RWD), foglamps, power driver seat, power-adjustable pedals, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat and a rear armrest. The Chrome & Leather package adds 18-inch chrome-clad wheels, automatic headlamps, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery and an upgraded six-speaker sound system. Chrome-clad 20-inch wheels are optional on the Rallye.

The Charger R/T adds to the Rallye with Chrome & Leather package (minus the chrome wheels) the V8 engine, an iPod interface, an auto-dimming mirror, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth and a touchscreen stereo faceplate. The SRT Option Group III is essentially the R/T's Media Center package.

The
2010 Dodge Charger is available with four engines, one for each trim level. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional on the 3.5, Rallye and R/T. The base Charger gets a 2.7-liter V6 that produces 178 hp and 190 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic is standard. Considering the engine's meager power output, fuel economy is a lackluster 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. This engine gets a four-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive and a five-speed auto with all-wheel drive. Fuel economy ratings are 17/25/20 mpg with RWD and 17/23/19 mpg with AWD.

The Charger R/T is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 making 368 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard. The Charger SRT8 is the king of the hill, with a 6.1-liter V8 that produces 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. In government crash tests, the
2010 Dodge Charger achieved a perfect five stars for frontal crash protection and rear side crash protection. The Charger's large size and long wheelbase translate into a generously sized cabin with plenty of rear legroom. Unfortunately, the 2010 Dodge Charger's sloping roof line makes rear-seat access more challenging than in other sedans, and rear headroom is a bit less than normal as well.

2010 Dodge Challenger

For 2010, the Dodge Challenger SE now comes with a five-speed automatic as well as stability control. Relative to the Mustang and Camaro, the Challenger offers far better rear passenger space, a smoother ride and a more serene cabin. Cornering performance is compromised by the Challenger's bulk, light steering and (in non-SRT8 models) soft suspension and tires, but like the original Challenger, this one excels on boulevards and highways. Ultimately, the Challenger's appeal depends on what kind of pony car you're looking for.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Dodge Challenger is a large sport coupe capable of seating five passengers. A late-availability Super Track Pack is said to include the regular Track Pack's equipment plus high performance tires, a larger rear stabilizer bar, performance brake pads and a revised stability control calibration with an "ESP off" function.

Powertrains and Performance
The base Challenger SE is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 250 hp and 250 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a five-speed automatic as standard equipment, with a six-speed manual available as an option. In recent testing, the Challenger R/T reached 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, and the Challenger SRT8 took only 5.3 seconds. Fuel economy registers an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 20 mpg in combined driving for the V6 Challenger SE. All 2010 Dodge Challenger models feature stability control and side curtain airbags as standard safety equipment.

Interior Design and Special Features
Unlike the
Dodge Challenger's distinctive-looking exterior, the interior is quite bland. At 16.2 cubic feet, the Challenger's trunk boasts impressive cargo capacity for this segment.

Driving Impressions
While performance numbers for the
2010 Dodge Challenger are impressive, the feeling behind the wheel leaves us a bit flat. In the hands of our experienced test-drivers, the Challenger SRT8 can weave through the slalom cones with impressive speed, but on curvy roads in the real world, even this high-performance Challenger variant lacks the nimbleness and steering feel to keep up with the Mustang GT.

As a boulevard cruiser or road-tripper, though, the Challenger shines. Power down the windows, though, and you'll get to enjoy the
Challenger's big-displacement soundtrack.

2007 Cadillac CTS-V

The 2007 Cadillac CTS-V is a performance variant of the regular CTS entry-level luxury sedan. The 2007 Cadillac CTS-V comes solely as a four-door sedan with one trim level. Virtually all of the regular CTS's features come standard on the CTS-V.

Highlights include HID headlights, 18-inch wheels with 245/45WR18 Goodyear tires, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, aggressively bolstered sport seats, a premium Bose audio system with an in-dash six-CD changer, a navigation system and a power sunroof. Emphasizing the CTS-V's sporty personality, Cadillac has made a six-speed manual the only transmission choice.

Brembo brakes with four-piston calipers and ABS are standard on the
2007 Cadillac CTS-V, as are front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver-adjustable stability control system (StabiliTrak). In NHTSA crash testing, the regular CTS scored four out of five stars for driver and front-passenger protection in frontal impacts, while side-impact tests resulted in a four-star rating for front passengers and a five-star rating for rear passengers.

The engine’s lightweight aluminum construction – including its cylinder heads and block – delivers an excellent power-to-weight ratio (1:9.6) and good chassis balance (53 percent front / 47 percent rear).

To help develop and manage its higher horsepower and torque output, and to reduce noise, vibration and harshness, the CTS-V features several modifications, including:
High-strength pistons help improve engine durability, particularly under high-performance operating conditions
Revised valves and stiffer valve springs better accommodate valve operation with the high-lift cam
Enhanced induction system enables enhanced engine breathing, helping to increase horsepower output
High-flow fuel injectors deliver fuel at the faster rate needed due to increased intake airflow
Dual exhaust constructed of 2.5-inch (159-mm) diameter stainless steel pipe to help minimize back pressure, increase horsepower and ensure proper exhaust tone.

CTS-V chassis refinements include revised front engine cradle to handle the high horsepower and torque from the V-8 engine. The front stabilizer bar was increased from a 23-mm hollow bar to 26.6-mm hollow bar.

Shock diameter was increased from 36 to 46 mm and valving refined to suit the vehicle’s high-performance driving characteristics. A Brembo brake system with 355 x 32 mm front and 365mm x 28 mm rear rotors is incorporated in the
Cadillac CTS-V

2007 Nissan Quest

The 2007 Nissan Quest gets a midcycle refresh. The Quest's controversial pillar-style center stack has been retired, with its gauges and controls finding a somewhat more traditional home on the minivan's instrument panel. Nissan has also improved the center-stack design, expanded storage capability and added auto-folding headrests to the third-row seat. Overall, the changes to the 2007 Nissan Quest are welcome.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2007 Nissan Quest minivan is available in four trims: 3.5 base, 3.5 S, 3.5 SL and 3.5 SE. The top-of-the-line 3.5 SE trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, power-sliding doors on both sides, a sunroof, heated leather seats, a power front-passenger seat, a backup camera, and an upgraded 265-watt, 10-speaker Bose audio system. Major options, depending on the trim level, include a Seat Package with a third-row flat-folding third-row bench seat and second-row captain's chairs; a fixed front-row center console; satellite radio; Bluetooth connectivity; a navigation system; and a rear DVD entertainment system.

Standard on all Quest minivans are front-seat active head restraints, side curtain airbags for all three rows, traction control, a tire-pressure monitor and antilock brakes with brake assist.

Driving Impressions
The
2007 Nissan Quest is an enthusiast-oriented option in the minivan category; the van is acquiescent around corners and offers sharp steering.

2010 Dodge Caliber

For 2010, the Dodge Caliber is offered in five new "lifestyle" trim levels ranging from the value-oriented Express base model to the sporty top-of-the-line Rush. All models get an upgraded interior that includes a padded center armrest, padded door trim panels and active front head restraints. The Caliber's two available four-cylinder engines are a good case in point.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Dodge Caliber is a compact four-door hatchback that's offered in five new "lifestyle" trim levels. Interior upgrades include a tachometer, fold-flat front passenger seat and 60/40-split-folding and reclining rear seatbacks.

Springing for the Uptown model gets you rear disc brakes (versus drums), automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver seat, heated front seats and a premium nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system with steering-wheel-mounted controls and flip-down speakers in the liftgate.

The sporty
2010 Dodge Caliber Heat takes the Mainstreet model's equipment list and adds 18-inch polished alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension and steering, rear disc brakes (versus drums) and specialized interior trim. Building on the Caliber Heat is the Rush, which adds a larger 2.4-liter engine, 18-inch chrome-clad alloy wheels and a rear spoiler.

Powertrains and Performance
A 2.0-liter engine rated at 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque is standard on all trim levels except the Rush. The 2.0-liter engine returns EPA estimates of 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined with the manual transmission and 23/27/25 mpg with the CVT.

Safety
Front-seat side airbags and stability control aren't available on the Express but are optional on the remaining trim levels.

The
2010 Dodge Caliber earned perfect scores in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests, including five stars in both frontal and side impacts.

2010 Dodge Avenger

The 2010 Dodge Avenger leaves us wondering what it's supposed to be avenging. The 2010 Dodge Avenger's interior is also a letdown.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2010 Dodge Avenger midsize sedan comes in three trim levels: SXT, Express and R/T. The Express adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foldaway heated mirrors, eight-way power driver seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped wheel and shifter and a six-speaker sound system with touchscreen stereo interface, digital music storage and steering-wheel controls. R/T options include the Express' upgraded stereo or a further upgraded multimedia bundle featuring Bluetooth, a hard-drive-based navigation system, real-time traffic, digital music storage and the additional option of six Boston Acoustics speakers. The front-wheel-drive 2010 Dodge Avenger Express and SXT are powered by a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine rated at 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission is a four-speed automatic. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2010 Dodge Avenger SXT are 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the
2010 Dodge Avenger includes antilock brakes, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. In government crash tests, the Avenger earned a top five-star rating for its performance in head-on collisions. The poor quality of the Avenger's interior materials is a major letdown, especially if you compare the Avenger to cars like the Fusion or Accord.

Driving Impressions
The four-cylinder
2010 Dodge Avenger offers sluggish acceleration and unrefined gearchanges from the outdated four-speed automatic. Handling capabilities are likewise underwhelming, though the Avenger does have decent ride quality

2011 Dodge Ram 3500

For 2011, the Dodge Ram 3500 gains a new "Outdoorsman" package and a number of standard features. When one considers the Ram 3500's impressive work abilities, there's good reason they call these trucks "heavy duty."

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2011 Dodge Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup is available in three cab styles: regular, Crew Cab and Mega Cab (a jumbo crew cab).

The regular cab comes in ST or SLT trims; the Crew Cab in ST, SLT or Laramie trims; and the Mega Cab is SLT or Laramie only. With the exception of Crew Cab short beds, all Ram 3500s have a dual-rear-wheel axle.

Power windows and door locks are standard on Crew Cab models, while regular cabs have manual controls.

The SLT adds chrome exterior trim, chrome-clad wheels, electronic trailer brake control, power folding/heated side mirrors, a sliding rear window, cloth upholstery, full power accessories, keyless entry, cruise control and satellite radio. SLT Crew Cab and Mega Cab Rams are eligible to upgrade to the Big Horn package (sold as the Lone Star package in Texas). On the other end of the spectrum is the luxurious Laramie, which features polished alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seating, a power driver seat with memory, power-adjustable pedals, auto-dimming mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and an upgraded nine-speaker surround-sound audio system with digital music storage and iPod integration.

Additional luxuries available for the upper trims include a sunroof, remote start, power-adjustable pedals, front bucket seats, a navigation system, heated and ventilated front seats, satellite radio, an upgraded stereo and a rear-seat entertainment system.
The
2011 Dodge Ram 3500 is available in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Dual rear wheels are standard, but buyers may choose a single rear wheel as an option. Properly equipped, the Ram 3500 can tow up to 22,750 pounds.

Standard safety equipment for the
2011 Dodge Ram 3500 includes antilock disc brakes and side curtain airbags.

2011 Dodge Ram 2500

For 2011, the Dodge Ram 2500 gains a new trim package, "Outdoorsman." Midway through the model year, the 6.7-liter turbodiesel engine gains a power boost for a total of 800 pound-feet of torque.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2011 Dodge Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup is available in three cab styles: regular, Crew Cab and Mega Cab (a jumbo crew cab). The regular cab comes in ST or SLT trims; the Crew Cab in ST, SLT or Laramie trims; and the Mega Cab in SLT or Laramie only.

Power windows and door locks are standard on Crew Cab models, while regular cabs have manual controls.

The SLT adds chrome exterior trim, chrome-clad wheels, electronic trailer brake control, power-folding/heated side mirrors, a sliding rear window, cloth upholstery, full power accessories, keyless entry, cruise control and satellite radio.

The
2011 Dodge Ram 2500 is available with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive (4WD is electronically engaged at the high trim levels and mechanically engaged at the lowest one). Standard safety equipment for the 2011 Dodge Ram 2500 includes antilock disc brakes and side curtain airbags. In Edmunds braking tests, a Dodge Ram Power Wagon came to a stop from 60 mph in 141 feet, which is about average for a heavy-duty pickup.

Both of the Ram's engines are strong and provide plenty of power for towing and hauling heavy loads, though compared to its diesel-powered heavy-duty rivals, the
2011 Dodge Ram 2500 isn't quite as strong when accelerating on flat land or trying to maintain speed on long uphill grades with a heavy trailer in tow.

2011 Dodge Ram 1500

For 2011, the Dodge Ram 1500 sees a shuffling of trim packages but otherwise remains unchanged.

When it was fully redesigned for 2009, the Ram 1500 sported a few features never before seen on a big pickup.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2011 Dodge Ram 1500 is a full-size pickup available in multiple body styles and bed lengths. The crew cab model expands rear-seat legroom even farther, but is only available with a 5-foot-7 bed.

There are four trim levels. The base ST model (available in regular and extended cabs) comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, vinyl floor covering, air-conditioning, a 40/20/40-split front bench seat, vinyl upholstery, a folding rear bench seat (extended-cab only), a tilting steering column and a six-speaker stereo with a CD player with an auxiliary audio jack. The SLT (available in all cab styles) adds 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior trim, heated outside mirrors, carpet floor covering, cloth upholstery, cruise control, full power accessories, a power-sliding rear window, keyless entry, a trip computer and satellite radio.

The Sport (available in all cab styles) adds a larger V8, dual exhaust, a body-colored grille, 20-inch chrome wheels, foglamps, auto-dimming rear- and sideview mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, unique bucket seats and console, a touchscreen display, Bluetooth, an upgraded audio system (with CD/DVD/MP3 player, USB port, HD radio, 30GB hard drive), a 10-way power driver seat and a split-folding rear seat with under-seat storage (for crew cabs).

The standard engine on the two-wheel-drive Ram ST 1500 regular and quad cabs is a 3.7-liter V6 that produces 215 hp and 235 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic is standard. Fuel economy is a meager 14 mpg city/20 highway and 16 mpg combined.

Fuel economy with 2WD is 14/20/16 mpg (4WD is 1 mpg less). Standard safety equipment on the
2011 Dodge Ram 1500 includes four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability control, hill-start assist, trailer-sway control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.

Interior Design and Special Features
The crew cab's rear seat is very comfortable, offering loads of legroom and an agreeable seatback angle.

The Ram provides plenty of standard and optional storage spaces.

2011 Dodge Nitro

For 2011, the Dodge Nitro gets a few new standard and optional features. Underneath the buff bod, the Nitro shares its platform with the Jeep Liberty.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The
2011 Dodge Nitro is a five-passenger SUV available in Heat, Detonator and Shock trim levels.

There is also the available Heat 4.0 package that includes a bigger V6 engine, an upgraded nine-speaker audio system and Bluetooth connectivity.

EPA estimates are an underwhelming 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 16/20/17 with four-wheel drive. In performance testing, a rear-drive Nitro with the 4.0-liter engine went from zero to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds while a 4x4 model hit the target speed in 8.2 seconds.

Safety
The stability control includes a trailer sway control feature. Rear parking sensors are standard on the Detonator and Shock.

The
2011 Dodge Nitro has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash-testing procedures. In Edmunds brake testing, a Nitro with the optional 20-inch wheels came to a stop from 60 mph in 122 feet -- good performance for this type of vehicle.

With the rear seats folded, there are 65 cubic feet of cargo space available, about average for this class.

Driving Impressions
With its aggressive styling and macho name, you'd think that the
2011 Dodge Nitro offered vigorous power and acceleration.
